Mass. General Becomes First ER in State to Offer MAT

Massachusetts General Hospital is the first emergency department to offer buprenorphine to patients with opioid use disorder who want to start treatment immediately.   Doctors who want to prescribe buprenorphine, likely as a key part of a medication-assisted treatment (MAT) plan for opioid use disorder, can now opt to complete an eight-hour course—which includes listening to people who are on MAT and how it has improved their lives—and sign a physician waiver from the federal government. While this ensures that physicians know what it is they’re prescribing before they do so, some view this extra training as a hurdle by physicians that prevents them from offering this treatment.   That is something Dr. Ali Raja, executive vice chairman of the Department of Emergency at Mass. Gener...

Taking on Addiction: Are Cities Helping or Hurting the Homeless Population?

Recently, I traveled to Portland for a conference; an Oregon city I hadn’t visited in several years. As I walked the streets during breaks in my work schedule, I was surprised at the number of homeless people camped out on every corner. Tents adorned the sidewalks, campers panhandled pedestrians who walked by, and garbage was everywhere. I even spotted a couple of used needles sitting atop a public trashcan. The Increasing Homeless Population As it turns out, Portland’s homeless population has been on a steady increase the past several years, rising 10% from 2015 to 2017. In fact, it’s become so prevalent that the city was forced to declare a homeless emergency several years ago, an issue that has not only impacted those on the streets, but local Portlanders as well. In a recent K...

The next cybersecurity headache: Employees know the rules but just don’t care

Employees are still ignoring cybersecurity best practice despite being more aware of the risks. Cybersecurity has shot to the top of many IT leaders' priorities over the past few months as remote working became the de facto way of doing business. Yet despite more awareness of the security risks of working from home, employees are still showing a lax attitude when putting it into practice, according to new findings. Security firm Trend Micro surveyed more than 13,000 remote workers across 27 countries for its latest Head in the Clouds survey, which sought to understand individuals' attitudes towards risk in terms of cybersecurity. Zoom: We’ve delivered on all of our security and privacy promises, apart from one

CEO Eric Yuan said the company had been working to improve safety, privacy and security, but has pushed back the date for its transparency report. The meteoric rise of videoconferencing platform Zoom during the global lockdowns was accompanied by criticism of its cybersecurity standards. As more remote workers turned to Zoom for business meetings, virtual get-togethers and other forms of socially distanced communication, it soon became apparent that security –thanks to headaches such as a wave of ' Zoom-bombing ' – was an area that needed more work. As a result, Zoom CEO Eric Yuan launched a 90-day programme that pledged to addre...

Beginnings And Endings

“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.” – Seneca, Roman Stoic philosopher, statesman, dramatist, and humorist (ca. 4 B.C.-65 A.D.)Chapters in a book, seasons of the year, life’s births and deaths – everything has a beginning and an end. Why should we fear either one? Whether or not we’ve grown up fearing change or welcoming it, one thing is certain: Things will always be in a state of change. There will be beginnings even as there are endings. How we choose to embrace or avoid them is up to us.The good news is that we do possess this choice. This is immensely liberating for it means that we’re not locked into some predetermined result. By our own actions – or inaction – we will reap the benefits or experience the consequences. Knowing that we have the power to affect o...

How To Live A Daring Life

“A sheltered life can be a daring life as well. For all serious doing starts from within.” – Eudora Welty, American author (1909-2001)What comes to mind when you think of someone who’s daring? Is it a mountain climber attempting to scale a formidable peak? Is it a brilliant researcher who discovers a cure for a disease that has been a scourge on humanity for centuries? Is it your loved one who inspects every room in the house upon your return to ensure that it’s safe to enter? Is it you?Everyone has daring in them – although few recognize this ability. How do we know we are daring? How can we cultivate and nurture it so that it becomes yet another manifestation of who and what we are? As with most anything that is truly meaningful and has value, daring starts from within. This should serve ...

Nothing is off limits. For instance, anyone who has ever wondered what sex addiction is, what it looks like, how it manifests and how it’s treated, now has a great opportunity to ask the guy who literally wrote the book on this subject whatever it is they’d like to know, including: How do I know if I’m a sex addict? What does “sexual sobriety” look like? Should my mate give me a free pass on cheating if I’m sexually addicted? This is also a great chance to talk about infidelity. If you’ve cheated and feel badly about it, or y...

Is Trauma-Focused CBT Right for My Child?

Childhood trauma can have a lasting impact on a young person’s development, so finding support to help him or her effectively cope with what happened is essential. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is one of the most effective and best-studied forms of therapy, and trauma-focused CBT was specifically developed to address childhood trauma using the CBT approach. While most children who’ve suffered trauma can benefit from the treatment, it isn’t right for every situation, so finding out whether it’s right for your child is a good idea before going ahead.Trauma-focused CBT is a short-term therapy designed to help children and their parents work through a trauma. The treatment aims to help children understand that what happened wasn’t their fault, reduce shame, help with any symptoms related ...

Addiction to Romance Novels

Romance, excitement, adventure, drama–romance novels lead the industry in book sales, but at what price? Addiction to romance novels is understood as a form of pornography addiction and, as such, also has porn addiction side effects. In some ways, it is easier to hide and has less social stigma, especially in the early stages of addiction. But addiction to romance novels can become as debilitating and damaging as addiction to pornography.Defining the AddictionIf you explore the romantic fiction blogosphere, you’ll find that many writers use the term addiction without qualms. Their blogs boast that their offerings will “feed your addiction,” but they miss the point. Addiction, and especially porn addiction side effects, can destroy families and cause harm. What’s the difference between bein...
